Garland Celebrates 100 Years of Excellence

Less than one percent of American companies live to see their 100th birthday. This makes the milestone that much sweeter for The Garland Company, Inc. based in Cleveland, Ohio. It all began in 1895, when Samuel D. Wise loaned his brother $100 to purchase the Garland Refining Co. Jacob B. Wise went on to nurture the company through two World Wars and the Great Depression by taking care of his employees and customers throughout those difficult times.

Renamed The Garland Co. in 1914, the firm expanded its product line through the years from oils, greases and paints to roofing and flooring materials for industrial and agricultural uses, as well as a consumer line of house paints.

Today, the mainstay of the company centers around the manufacture and sales of commercial roofing systems. These products include high performance rubberized built up roofs and an innovative insulated steel roof system.

The company has prevailed by maintaining its loyalty to its customers and employees and by providing innovative solutions in a demanding and ever-changing market.

Richard J. DeBacco, president of Garland, says, "From the beginning we were determined to make this a people-dependent company."

David Sokol, Director of Marketing adds, "Garland got here by taking care of its people-its customers and employees. Everything else about a company must change and frequently does-manufacturing methods, strategies for promoting products, and products themselves. The one thing that doesn't change," continues Sokol, "is company cultures. we must remain focused on our customer's needs."

Today, Garland offers an extensive array of roofing system solutions, including modified bitumen membranes, liquid-applied systems, metals and mastics, and roof maintenance products. In addition, all Garland plants operate under ISO 9001 quality control standards.

In addition to its two headquarters in Cleveland, OH and Ontario, Canada, the company has sales offices in all major cities.
