What is the Garland Greenhouse?

At Garland, sustainable design is not a marketing campaign but rather a philosophy of how we design our products and operate our company. Garland Industries, Inc. has been helping organizations adapt to the ever-changing social and economic challenges of facility-infrastructure management since our founding in 1895. As an early adopter of sustainable initiatives, we have successfully integrated the capabilities necessary for realizing our customers' visions of a fully sustainable future. The Garland Company has a long history of manufacturing and marketing sustainable roofing solutions well before the term "Sustainable Design" came into vogue. Garland launched R-Mer Lite® insulated steel roofing system in 1991. R-Mer Lite is 100% recyclable at the end of its useful life.

In 1995, Garland won the prestigious Plant Engineering Product of the Year Award for incorporating post-consumer recycled tires into its modified bitumen roof systems. In the late 1990's, Garland introduced the first green roofing system, GreenShield®, that was designed specifically for the diverse climates of North America. In 2003, we began developing partnerships with companies specializing in alternative energy solutions, to help our customers successfully integrate rooftop solar systems into their sustainable building designs. In response to customer enthusiasm for environmentally responsible, energy-reducing systems, in 2007 Garland created a new subsidiary: Garland Energy Systems, Inc.®, dedicated to making alternative energy solutions as easy to purchase, install, and maintain as utility electricity. Finally, Garland has been a member of many organizations committed to sustainable roofing solutions such as the EPA's ENERGY STAR® Program and the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design® (LEED).

One of the most important and often most overlooked aspects of Sustainable Design is long-term performance. All Garland systems are engineered, manufactured, designed, specified and installed with the goal of reaching 30+ years of service life. With proper design, installation and routine maintenance, this is a very attainable goal for many Garland roofing systems. In an age when many roofs fail within ten years, Garland systems provide alternatives for those customers who are truly committed to long-term performance and Sustainable Design.

To better equip our customer in identifying sustainable alternatives to existing roofing technology, The Garland Company has developed the Garland Greenhouse product line. Products contained in the Garland Greenhouse represent eco-friendly alternatives to today's roofing technologies by incorporating one or more of the following characteristics:

  • Post-consumer and Pre-consumer Recycled Content
  • Lowered Volatile Organic Content (VOC)
  • Highly Reflective Surfacing
  • 100% Solids Technology
  • Water-Based Technology
  • End of Life Recyclability
  • Energy Performance Characteristics

The Greenhouse products all have enhanced product data sheets that include Eco-Facts that highlight the product's environmental performance characteristics.
