Keeping the Heart of campus watertight

Nestled in the beauty of New York’s Hudson Valley near the town of Poughkeepsie, Vassar College matches its idyllic surroundings with a famously picture-perfect campus. With an 8:1 professor-to student ratio, Vassar’s 2,430 undergrads also enjoy a great deal of individualized and personalized support for their educational needs. So when the roof of Vassar’s College Center building began failing, facility director Dean Jaeger knew it was time for action.

"A leaky roof just wasn't an option"

Said Jaeger, “When classes or events need to be moved or canceled because one of our buildings isn’t performing as it should, that has a ripple effect across our entire system. As the name suggests, College Center is the heart of that system, so trying to limp along with a leaky roof just wasn’t an option.”

"The heart of Vassar is strong and watertight"

Jaeger contacted local Garland Territory Manager Tim Roth to assess the condition of the current roof. Roth quickly determined that the roof at College Center was not viable for restoration, and that the best course of action was a full replacement. Said Roth, “The previous EPDM system was showing signs of failure. After discussing options with Dean and his team at Vassar, we landed on a 2-ply modified bitumen system, which delivers a lifespan about twice as long as a standard EPDM roof.” 

Roth partnered with local roofing contractor Milcon Construction on the project, which delivered on time and on budget. At the conclusion of the project, Roth delivered a 30-year warranty on the new roof to Jaeger. 

Jaeger explained, “If College Center has a leaky roof, it has a pretty major impact on our entire campus. Thanks to the new system, we’re able to focus our attention on other building projects, knowing that the heart of Vassar is strong and watertight.”
